Starbucks Exec Quits For Chipotle Chief Tech Officer Role – Time

The fast-casual restaurant chain said Curt Garner, who has worked for Starbucks’ information technology group for the past 18 years, will become Chipotle’s CIO beginning Nov. 23. In his new role, Garner will report to Chipotle Chief Financial Officer Jack Hartung. Garner’s move comes after Starbucks hired CIO Gerri Martin-Flickinger as its new chief technology officer.

We are changing the way people think about and eat fast food, said Steve Ells, founder, chairman and co-CEO of Chipotle in a statement. As we look for ways to create efficiencies in our restaurants and improve the customer experience through the strategic use of technology, Curt’s experience and expertise make him an ideal and welcome addition to our management team.

Chipotle has added a new executive position to the restaurant chain’s ranks, the chief information officer, and has hired away Starbucks’ CIO to take on the job.

The use of technology has become an increasingly important component of how restaurant chains can compete for business today. Online ordering options via mobile apps are a way that chains such as Starbucks have sought to differentiate themselves. Delivery services are also being widely tested. Starbucks is particularly ahead of many when it comes to the company’s mobile payments, which accounted for 20% of the coffee chain’s U.S. business as of this summer. The progress Starbucks has made on the tech side of the business likely caught Chipotle’s attention.

The TVs, Variety says, could be out in the next few months. That’s a bummer for me, because I just bought a new Vizio for the Super Bowl. But it’s good news if you’re on the hunt for a new set, because it’ll mean you’ll get all the benefits of a Chromecast without sacrificing a precious HDMI port for one.

I’ve been using my Chromecast so often that I’ve been wondering why my new TV didn’t have the tech built-in. I guess somebody’s been reading my tweets, because that’s exactly what’s happening: Variety reports that Google is working with television set maker Vizio to build Chromecast capabilities directly into the company’s TV sets.

Google’s Chromecast is one of my favorite gadgets that costs under $100. Plug it into a television’s HDMI port, and you can easily beam videos, webpages and other content from your computer or smartphone to your big screen.

Barnes amp; Noble Splitting E-Reader Into Separate Business – Time

The two new companies are called Barnes & Noble Retail and Nook Media.

1

“We believe we are now in a better position to begin in earnest those steps necessary to accomplish a separation of Nook Media and Barnes & Noble Retail,” said CEO Michael Huseby in a statement. “We have determined that these businesses will have the best chance of optimizing shareholder value if they are capitalized and operated separately.”

Barnes & Noble is splitting its digital Nook enterprise off from its physical bookstore business, abandoning what analysts once saw as the company’s best chance of surviving competition from the likes of Amazon, which sells books, digital e-readers and a plethora of other goods and services.

Barnes & Noble’s stock was up more than 5% to $21.70 around noon eastern time on the day the news was announced.

But the Nook has dragged on the company’s revenue as the device posted a 22% decline in revenue to $87 million in the last quarter. The company as a whole posted a loss of $36.7 million in the same quarter.

Barnes & Noble’s Nook business was a latecomer, introduced in 2009 two years after Amazon introduced its first Kindle reader. Barnes & Noble’s brick-and-mortar bookstore businesses is still profitable; its retail segment saw a 0.8% increase in revenue to $955.6 million for the quarter.

The Barnes & Noble split is an indication that the bookstore’s foray into digitization hasn’t succeeded after William Lynch, the prime proponent of the Nook, resigned as CEO last year.

Borders bookstore applied for bankruptcy in 2011 and later folded into Barnes & Noble, leaving only one remaining massive physical bookstore chain left in the United States.

Feb. 29:After spending his entire professional career in Germany, Hamburger SV forward Bobby Wood could be returning stateside to join FC Cincinnati, according to a report from Bild.

Entering their first full season under head coach Ron Jans, FC Cincinnati are looking to improve upon last year’s league-worst outlay of 31 goals scored. During their expansion season in 2019, Costa Rican midfielder Allan Cruz was their leading scorer with seven goals and Cincy recently exercised a buyout option on 2019 Designated Player and forward Fanendo Adi who scored just one league goal for the club.

Any move for Wood would signify Cincy’s second major attacking addition ahead of the 2020 MLS campaign, after they landed Japanese forward Yuya Kubo as a Designated Player from Belgian side K.A.A. Apple Watch Will Be as Revolutionary as Watches and Clocks Were – Time

For a precedent, we need only look back to the development of the last great arm-mounted technology: the wristwatch. The early history of time-keeping machines bears a striking resemblance to the recent evolution of digital computers. Both are stories, at a technical level, of miniaturization and personalization, and both reveal how changes in the design of a common technology can alter not only its function but also the way it influences personal behavior and social norms.

Sign up for Inside TIME. Be the first to see the new cover of TIME and get our most compelling stories delivered straight to your inbox.

Then, finally, came the wristwatch. People no longer had to pull their time-keeping machines out of their pockets to consult them. The technology was now always in view, becoming, in effect, an extension of the human body. Affixed to the wrist, the watch, as the late historian David Landes explained in his book Revolution in Time, became an ever-visible, ever-audible companion and monitor. By continually reminding its wearer of time used, time spent, time wasted, time lost, it served as both prod and key to personal achievement and productivity. The wristwatch, Landes argued, played a major role in spreading the ethic of individualism throughout Western culture.

Mechanical clocks started out as large, institutional machines. Installed in cathedrals and town halls, they were the mainframes of their time, and they had a profound effect on the way people lived. Time, which had previously been experienced as a natural, cyclical flow, began to be experienced as a succession of discrete, precisely measurable units. Hours, minutes, and seconds ticked away with industrial exactitude, and people quickly adapted themselves to the new, martial rhythm. Society became more productive and predictable as well as more regimented.

Nicholas Carr is the author of the forthcoming book The Glass Cage: Automation and Us.

That’s all very exciting, but some wariness is in order. As the history of clocks reveals, strapping a technological companion and monitor onto your wrist can alter, in ways that are hard to foresee, life’s textures and rhythms. And never before have we had a tool that promises to be so intimate a companion and so diligent a monitor as the Apple Watch.

Apple has a lot riding on the diminutive gadget. It’s the first major piece of hardware the company has rolled out since the iPad made its debut four years ago. It’s the first new product to be designed under the purview of fledgling CEO Tim Cook. And, when it goes on sale early next year, it will be Apple’s first entry in a much-hyped product category—wearable computers—that has so far fallen short of expectations. Jocks and geeks seem eager to strap computers onto their bodies. The rest of us have yet to be convinced.

That was just the start. As inventors discovered ways to build smaller, less expensive clocks, the devices moved into people’s homes in the form of wall clocks and floor clocks — the equivalent of the bulky desktop PC that in the 1980s became a fixture of the modern home. With further engineering breakthroughs, clock mechanisms continued to shrink, leading to the creation of the pocket watch. People started carrying time-keeping machines around with them all day, just as we do with our smartphones.

National Parks Are Getting Trashed During COVID-19, Endangering Surrounding Communities

But there’s a bigger story here. If the Apple Watch proves popular, it will not just mark the next chapter in Apple’s story, as Cook described it. It will change our relationship to computers, weaving the already ubiquitous devices and their apps even more deeply into the fabric of our lives. The personal and social ramifications could be far-reaching.

At $349, the Apple Watch is pricey, and the device’s success remains uncertain. It does seem likely, though, that the gadget’s arrival will open yet another chapter in the story of personal computing. The watch, as today’s demos revealed, is the most solicitous computer yet. It taps you on the wrist whenever a new message or alert comes in. It formulates answers to questions you receive from friends. It reminds you where you parked your car. It tracks your health. It even allows you to broadcast your heartbeat to others.

The Coronavirus Seems to Spare Most Kids From Illness, but Its Effect on Their Mental Health Is Deepening

Apple has some experience in taking a lackluster new product and turning it into a must-have for the masses. When it released its iPod in 2001, there were already plenty of MP3 players on the market. None of them, though, had garnered much interest. The iPod, with its simple interface and copious capacity, broke the market open—and revolutionized the music business in the process. With the elegantly designed, eye-catching Apple Watch, the company is hoping to pull off a similar feat for wearables.

Many of us already feel as if we’re handcuffed to our computers. With its new smart watch, unveiled today in California, Apple is hoping to turn that figure of speech into a literal truth.

Warshaw- Five bold statements after four weeks of MLS

Maybe FCC weren’t noobs. Maybe they were ahead of the game. They were never going to bring in a Carlos Vela or Sebastian Giovinco this season. If you can’t sign one of those players, you have to find a different competitive advantage. Sporting Kansas City have used continuity and consistency of a core group. The Red Bulls have used intense pressing.

FCC appear to have found another route: center backs who can clear the crap out of headers, multiple players who can dominate set pieces, a solid team culture, and a few undervalued attackers who can crush it on the break. It hasn’t exactly been the La La Land of soccer performances so far, but it’s a clear plan that’s worked to this point.

And what they need is this: Some defense. Johan Kappelhof and Marcelo have struggled at center back, while the play of Chicago’s fullbacks thus far can not be described in family-friendly terms.

They switch back and forth depending on the situation, and look well drilled and comfortable in all of them. I’m not sure where they could be vulnerable. There’s a concern that the individual defenders might not continue to perform at the same elite level they have through the first three games, but I’m also pretty sure the tactical preparation has both helped with it and could cover up for it.

MD: I’m actually not gonna push back against this one – I think Bobby’s probably right, especially since the Red Bulls have lost some of their identity and since Sporting KC have sacrificed a bit of their defensive solidity in pursuit of a little more quality distributing from the back.

MD: It’s waaaaay too early to make anything close to a definitive statement here, but it was clear from the off that FCC were prioritizing solidity and locker room chemistry in how they built their roster. Obviously the early returns are impressive.

Gaitan should provide an immediate boost to the attack (which has looked pretty good despite some disappointing finishing), and that’ll be nice. I think he’ll also give Veljko Paunovic the excuse he needs to switch to a 3-5-2, with Djordje Mihailovic becoming the No. 8 and Bastian Schweinsteiger moving to sweeper.

Netflix said on Tuesday its board of directors has approved a seven-for-one stock split.

The company plans to expand its 62-million customer base with a launch in India in 2016, sources told The Times of India. The service will include popular local shows such as Buniyaad, Nukkad, and Malgudi Days, and will be available on Apple iOS and Google Android devices.

With subscribers in over 40 countries, Netflix has set its sights on one of the biggest markets known to Internet TV companies: India.

The company has several challenges ahead. India’s broadband connection speeds are two times less than the global average, and they rank among the lowest in the Asia-Pacific region. For Netflix to thrive in the country, potential online moviegoers must fight through power cuts, jam-packed cities and, well, hungry, fiber-optic cable-eating monkeys.

First, it continues the global expansion of the movie-streaming company with ambitions of hitting 200 countries by the end of next year. “We now believe we can complete our global expansion over the next two years, while staying profitable, which is earlier than we expected,” said CEO Reed Hastings in a letter to investors earlier this year.

Second, India is huge, and companies are speeding toward a growing market of eager web surfers. The nation of 1.2 billion people leads the world in Internet user growth across all platforms, according to the 2015 Internet Trends report by Kleiner Perkins. India has over 240 million Internet users, and added 63 million new users last year, the report said. It is the second largest market for Facebook and LinkedIn, and Amazon and Alibaba are duking it out for dominance of India’s $6 billion online retail industry. Clearly, the country is a potential cash cow for a company like Netflix.

The controversy over the slowing performance of aging iPhones exploded last week after a blog post highlighted the relationship between iPhone performance and battery condition. Apple later confirmed that it has been slowing older iPhones’ performance to prevent sudden shutdowns as their aging batteries lost potency over time.

We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize, the company said in a letter published on its website Thursday.

In the letter posted Thursday, Apple said it considers batteries consumable components and that it has always wanted customers to be able to use iPhones as long as possible. To that end, the company will cut the price of a battery replacement by $50 for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later starting in late January. That means instead of dropping $79 to get a new battery and make your old iPhone work like new again, you’ll pay $29 through December 2018.

iPhone users can also expect an iOS software update early in 2018 that will include new information about their battery’s health, letting people see when the phone’s battery may be affecting its performance.

The iPhone battery revelations struck a chord because some iPhone users believe the company intentionally slows its older phones to get customers to buy new ones. However, Apple says the practice is meant to prolong the life of older batteries. This feature’s only intent is to prevent unexpected shutdowns so that the iPhone can still be used, Apple says in a new support article.

Still, Apple is now facing several lawsuits over the matter. The company also promised to keep working on how it manages performance to avoid shutdowns, and said it hopes to earn customers’ trust again next year.

San Francisco 49ers Go Long on STEM Education at Levis Stadium – Time

The interactive lessons vary: One class might teach how a helmet is engineered. Another might be on the physics of throwing a ball, explaining how a physical object like a football deals with airflow, throwing mechanics and force, and how each impacts the direction and length of a throw. There are even lessons on engineering your plate, including nutrition facts and a fitness class that uses the 49ers’ training camp as an example.

I was privileged to attend the inaugural class where they were studying the engineering principles of making a football. Using all of the materials needed to make a football, each group got to assemble a football from scratch, sew it up, inflate it and then test it in a special kicking area where the students could see how each ball performed based on how well they created it.

The San Francisco 49ers Academy was established through a partnership with Communities in Schools (CIS) in 1996. CIS started as a small grassroots movement led by Bill Milliken, one of the nation’s foremost pioneers in the movement to help young people graduate from high school and go onto rewarding careers. The 49ers Academy is a unique partnership – a public school, supported by a private non-profit agency. The 49ers are the major underwriter of this program.

However, what they are doing in STEM education at Levi’s Stadium itself is amazing. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and is a dedicated educational program to get kids interested in these disciplines, eventually guiding them into related career endeavors.

According to Joanne Pasternack, director of community relations and the 49ers Foundation, these executives could see Google, Intel, Apple, HP, Facebook and many of the leading tech companies in the world laid out right in front of them.

The class on applied mathematics explains angular attack and game geometry as well as teaching about statistics, using the Super Bowl and its various Roman-numeral numbering schemes as part of the lesson plan. All lessons are designed to emphasize how math, science, technology and engineering are used in everything from building a stadium to creating sports equipment to the math and physics that go into playing the game of football.

The first activity features a full tour of the stadium, focusing on the engineering involved with creating a stadium. It shows off the green aspects of the stadium, including a visit to the garden on the roof as well as a look at the solar panels and how they’re used to create energy. The tour also demonstrates how clean technology is used to irrigate the field in order to care for the grass and turf. The kids also get to see the visiting team’s locker room, the field and many of the public areas of the stadium.

The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute has also been implemented in the Cabrillo Middle School in Santa Clara, CA, which is just down the street from Levi’s Stadium. With the 49ers’ support and big help from the Chevron Corporation, who created the STEM labs at the school, 60 students from the Santa Clara Unified School District are selected each year to go through a six-year program designed to inspire and prepare students with high academic potential to pursue STEM majors at top-tier universities and become future leaders in their fields. In addition to enriched math and science instruction, students have regular access to the Chevron STEMZone, a tech lab equipped with a laser cutter, 3D printers and other fabrication tools.

3

Steve Woodhead, Chevron’s global social investment manager, told me that when the 49ers approached them to help with the STEM Institute, they were glad to be involved and worked hard to create the learning labs used in these special education programs.

Another important partner in this program is the Silicon Valley Education Foundation. SVEF’s charter is to be a resource and advocate for students and educators. They provide advocacy, programs and resources to help students reach their full potential in the critical areas of science, technology, engineering and math. According to Muhammed Chaudhry, president and CEO of SVEF, his non-profit group played an important role in advising the 49ers and Chevron on STEM studies and helped with the development of the curriculum used in the institute’s educational programs.

The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute’s vision is to be a leader in STEM education, preparing and inspiring talented learners to meet the challenges of the global society through innovation, collaboration and creative problem solving.

“My mother was a school teacher, my father was the son of Italian immigrants, said Denise DeBartolo York, co-chairman of the San Francisco 49ers. Each day during the school year, 60 kids from one of the various schools in the Bay Area are brought to Levi’s Stadium in one of the 49ers’ official team buses. They are then broken up into three different groups of 20 each to rotate through three distinct activities.

Matt Van Dixon instructs students at the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute at Levis Stadium

The second activity takes place in the new 49ers Museum and includes lessons using various games and interactive screens. Students learn how engineering and math are used to create 49ers football equipment, and how physics is applied to things like passing, kicking and running. The day I was there, they also included a section on careers in math and science. By the way, a trip to the 49ers Museum is highly recommended. It’s one of the best sports museums in the U.S. They use Sony Xperia tablets and various technologies to really enhance the overall museum experience — and for those of us in the Bay Area, it evokes some great memories of five 49ers Super Bowl wins. read more

September 1, 2018 in the first round of the Russian World Cup Asian qualifying Group A Top 12 in China as a guest team against old rivals South Korea. In the 20th minute, when defender Zheng free kick, the ball he accidentally crashed into his own door. 63 minutes and 66 minutes, and Li Qinglong Zizhe each having two goals. South Korea was to expand the score to 3-0, and then into the sea and Hao Junmin two goals in three minutes. Unfortunately, the Chinese team eventually lost 2-3, 12 did not have a good start strong in the front. 15 years later, the national football team will participate in the preliminaries of the top 12 Asia: In 2001, the national football team won ahead of two World Cup finals tickets, but in the next three Asian preliminaries, were lost to the national soccer team before the 32 and before 20, never entered the final stage. This time, the 12-strong tournament is the final stage of the national football team to return to Asia after 15 years, but it lost 2-3 to old rivals South Korea in the face, and failed to have a good start. Tai Chi third Super League will begin: the game and the national football team, the three Premier League players from South Korea will start the race, they are Suning, Shenhua and the Zhangxian Zhu Jin Qixi, which with the club teammate Wu and territories . South Korean national football team in 38 years only won a victory: Top 12 lost to South Korea in the first round, so since 1978, the national football team in the First Division tournament won only encounter Korea a victory, that is to say, in 2010, the East Asian Cup with a 3-0 victory over the opponent was not a major player. Since then, the Chinese national soccer teams game against South Korea are in a 2-2 draw in the last three times, in 2013 East Asian Cup and the 0-0 draw with South Korea, last years East Asian Cup with 2-0 defeat in Wuhan . Seoul World Cup Stadium has become the Chinese teams nightmare: after the national soccer team at the Seoul World Cup Stadium 2-3 to lose the game, the national team is difficult to win in this stadium, made only two draws and three losses in five games. In addition, the Chinese club team did not win the Seoul World Cup experience. Hengda in the 2013 AFC Champions League final first leg 2-2 defeat in Seoul, but this season Luneng AFC Champions League quarter-final first leg 1-3 defeat in Seoul. Zhang was knocked down for the first 20 minutes, South Korea straight left, the Sun Wu Shuo star ball passed the restricted area. Zhang referee gave a yellow card. Sun Star is kickInto the restricted area, Dongwon gently late header. Chaos, the ball in the Zheng Zhi, into the net. South Korea fortunate to lead 1-0. The first 29 minutes, the Chinese team in the backcourt steals and counterattack. Huang Bowen kicking his feet up front, Wu Lei quickly foot into the front court, forming a single shot, but the last one was just shovel the bottom line flood, he went back to the original position. The first 37 minutes, when Ren Hang breakthrough on the left, he was kicked Li Qinglong, the Chinese team to get a kick valuable frontcourt. Huang Bowen a penalty kick, the ball to the front, but the opponent siege. Then the Chinese team to pick up the ball and again. Zhang pass the ball in the penalty area, Sun turned to small-angle shot hit the side-netting. The first 40 minutes, Zhang Xuan show bad, direct the ball to the Chinese players. Then he went straight to the penalty area. When Wu Lei not stopping, he straight missed scoring chances, the Chinese team again missed the opportunity. When the second half began, the Chinese team made personnel adjustments, replaced Wu Hao Junmin play. The first 50 minutes, Zhang foul ball thrown into the penalty area, headed the Chinese team for 2 oclock ferry success. Then exit side, volley grazed beam, the bottom line. The first 63 minutes, received a pass in the left late Dongwon Zhang, Li Qinglong leaping high, sprang to the Ren Hang head. Despite his sincere subconsciously make saves, but he failed to stop the ball into the net, the Korean team will score expanded to 2-0. In 66 minutes, the left side of Xing membered fired from near the bottom cross. Dongwon gently rubbed late point in front, and Koo Ja-Cheol-point shot in the back. The ball hit the post, playing into the net. South Korea scored two goals in a short time, the score became 3-0. The first 74 minutes, Hao Junmin the ball into the box, Wu Shuo in the top of the ball to the seabed. After a slight adjustment on the sea, which is a critical lens. Song Liangrong failed to save, the Chinese team pulled one back 1-3. The first 76 minutes, Zhang Xiu Xuan Wu Lei break outside the box. Jang Hyun-soo gave the referee produced a yellow card, and gave the Chinese team a perfect free kick opportunity. Hao Junmin off the bench penalty kick, the ball flew directly to the wall of the dead. Chinese team played two goals in three minutes, the score is 2 to 3. Korean team goalkeeper: 1- Song Liangrong; back: 3- Wu large (49 Yellow), 15 just Hong, Jin Hee-4-yl, Soo Hyun Chapter 20 (76 Yellow); the lower back: 16- Ki Sung Yong , 14 South Korea glory; avant-garde: 7- Sun Star rain (90 + 8Minutes – Zheng Yourong), 13-Koo Ja-Cheol (78 minutes -9- Huang Xikang), 17 Li Qinglong (81 minutes -12- Lee Jae-sung); forwards: 10-late Dongwon Chinese squad Goalkeeper: 1 – Zeng Cheng; guard : 2- any flight (23 Yellow), Li 4-, 6- FengXiaoTing, Zheng 10-, 5- sheets (20 Yellow, 70 minutes, 13 Zhao Mingjian); midfielder: HuangBoWen 16-, 14- Sun g (78 minutes 18 high forest), 21 in the ocean, 15 Wu Xi (17- 46 minutes Hao Junmin); advance: 7-Wu Lei I was so nervous the first half, second half, lost the ball after three I gave up. It took 65 minutes to show the state of the art league, but my personal skills are still poor. Erroneously overestimated opponents underestimate their strength, resulting in a passive first half. If the Korean team two consecutive goals in the second half let the Chinese team completely relaxed, and I believe the game will be the same as the first half. In general, after South Korea three-goal lead, due to the lax defense, the Chinese team two consecutive goals may be. At this time, the South Korean team is very difficult to highly stressful, but China has full access to the excited state. I believe more than 10 minutes can really make national football team to tie the game, but Ren Hang defense can be said that the failure of high Jiajun, and the last two goals were because he could not settle down and lost, so in the end we must improve ! Watching the game really nervous. I always wanted to beat South Koreas national soccer team, but the result is bad luck. Otherwise, I can score more goals. Wu Lei is a psychological quality problem. To improve national soccer team level waste by burning incense and pray for granted. If this road is right, it must be the highest level in Asia. Ren Hang background really hard. This defense and Suning still dare to argue that this is a national disgrace football team incompetent. I do not know when it can be cured. Hey, maybe there is no timetable to tell the truth. Chinese teams offense actually be, but the defense is really bad, not to mention any of the aircraft. In fact, the other side is not much better, either win or lose, this is the country of football, but the problem must be clarified. Otherwise, it will be defeated Irans national soccer team will be cheered.

Zuckerberg’s answer was more equivocal. “Congresswoman, I’m not sure what that means,” he said.

In a tense exchange between Zuckerberg and Rep. Anna Eshoo, a California Democrat, the 33-year-old Zuckerberg admitted that his data was among the information acquired by Cambridge Analytica.

Zuckerberg is on Capitol Hill for the third consecutive day, testifying Wednesday before the House Energy and Commerce Committee about Facebook’s failures to protect users from outside political interference and data misuse ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Wednesday’s conversation, as with Zuckerberg’s testimony before a joint Senate committee the prior afternoon, centered largely on Cambridge Analytica, which acquired the data of approximately 87 million Facebook users from a researcher who created a personality quiz on the site.

The heat was, in any event, an effective strategy on the House’s part. Zuckerberg’s testimony revealed more than Tuesday’s meandering conversation. For instance, Zuckerberg said that user interaction on Facebook has not dropped in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. He also suggested that legal regulation of Facebook and similar social media platforms was an inevitable outcome of the current scandal.

“Yes,” Zuckerberg responded.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told a Congressional committee on Wednesday that his own personal information was among the large sum of data wrongfully obtained by political analysis firm Cambridge Analytica.

The House is often more fiery than the Senate, and Wednesday’s hearing in a crowded meeting room of the Rayburn House Office Building was decidedly more heated than the occasionally tedious Senate hearing sixteen hours earlier. At one point, Rep. Bobby Rush, an Illinois Democrat, compared Facebook to COINTELPRO, the covert F.B.I. surveillance program that targeted activist groups in the mid-twentieth century, and asked Zuckerberg if a parallel between him and notorious former F.B.I. Director J. Edgar Hoover was warranted.

National Parks Are Getting Trashed During COVID-19, Endangering Surrounding Communities

Police said that the OCI may have worked to transfer the tickets to THG. At least three other OCI officials have had their passports seized amid the ongoing investigation. Several THG officials have been arrested, including Evans, though the company has said that the allegations are “entirely without foundation.”

The official, Pat Hickey, formerly served as president of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) and was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He was arrested in Rio last week on suspicion that he was involved in the illegal selling of tickets to the Games; he has not been charged but is being held in Bangu 10 Prison.
